Colibri Vegan Bags: The Ultimate Luxury Vegan Company

You must have noticed this vegan handbag company in my social media. I was recently contacted by them to introduce you to this company that is creating probably the best vegan bags I’ve seen in my life (yes, yes!) Keep on reading to find out more.

It’s the story of Mathilde, a Frenchwoman passionate about luxury handbags and fashion. After turning vegan in 2014, she decided she no longer wanted to support the leather industry and thus was looking for vegan bags. Sadly, she couldn’t find one she liked and she decided to create a brand that suited both her style and taste. She then quit her job to create this company with animal welfare, sustainability, and also luxury and style in mind. How admirable!

The brand started in France and everything is produced in France. Absolutely everything! All is done meticulously by hand in an independent atelier and in small batches only.
Why the name ‘Colibri’?
In French, ‘Colibri’ means Hummingbird. And do you know the story of the Hummingbird?

‘One day, said the legend, there was a huge forest fire. All the terrified, aghast animals watched the disaster helplessly. Only the little hummingbird was activated, fetching a few drops with its beak to throw them on the fire. After a moment, the armadillo, annoyed by this derisory agitation, said to him: “Hummingbird! Are not you crazy? It is not with these drops of water that you will extinguish the fire! “And the hummingbird replied, “I know it, but I’m doing my part’.

The moral of this legend is that everyone can act and do something at their own level. If you think about it individually, you may think that it has no impact whatsoever. But it’s the sum of all of us that creates change!

The Vesper: Materials and Bag Composition

The materials that they use for this bag are simply wonderful, super soft, extremely high-end and of course, eco-friendly.

The bag is made out of high-quality synthetic leather, which is manufactured in Italy by a company that has the certification of “European Ecolabel”. You can read more about this here.

The lining of the bag is the best quality of microfibre out there, which is called ‘Alcantara‘. It’s an expensive material, but it’s also carbon neutral as they use agricultural waste and recycle wood and paper from different industries to produce the material. Even so, I think this is probably one of the best things about the bag. It does feel like the lining of high-end leather bags but without the cruelty or toxic chemicals! 🙂

The jewels of the bag are made out of bronze. They are developed and manufactured by a jewellery designer in France. The chains are made out of brass, and they have no palladium, nickel, and they are hypoallergenic. These are made in Italy though.

Finally, the bags are delivered in eco-friendly and reusable pouches, made of fair-trade organic cotton. They are produced under excellent conditions by an ethical and 100% carbon neutral factory in Pondichéry. The bags are shipped in recyclable carton and the staple fibers are recycled kraft paper. The adhesive tape is also recyclable.

If this isn’t the most eco-friendly and awesome concept you’ve seen in your life then I don’t know what is!

The other amazing good news is that they currently have a Kickstarter campaign, where you can now purchase a cheaper version of the Vesper. It’s for those of us who love the Vesper but need a budget-friendly option! Click on the link to support them and please follow them on social media:

In conclusion, I think that synthetic materials do have environmental consequences. However, every single manufactured product has an impact on the environment and the leather industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, as you can read here. Therefore I’m super happy to know that there is a brand out there who not only offers vegan handbags but also a collection that is super lush, highly fashionable and also one of the most eco-friendly things I’ve ever heard.
